Habits “R” Us

habits "R" usHabits “R” Us very simply put is that we are the product of our habits whether they are perceived as good or bad.

Who we are today is a result of all our habits from the past.

Stephen R. Covey, the author of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People is about powerful lessons in personal change.

Stephen goes on to talk extensively about how we are governed by the laws of nature, cause and effect which ripple throughout our whole lives and impact us whether we like it or not.

Stephen shares the story of the farmer who plants his seeds to his new crop one day and wakes up the following morning wanting to know why the crop is not ready to harvest.

We know that it takes time for the crop to grow and flourish before we can harvest it. There is a specific process of time, water, sunlight, shade, food / nutrients that need to take place before we can have a lovely healthy high yielding crop to enjoy the benefits.

Our lives are the same.

Who we are and what we have today is a product of our past habits. Habits "R" Us.

If I take my own health for an example say 15 + years ago you will see that I then had vastly different eating, exercising and lifestyle habits than I do today. Back then I was 105 Kilos (231 Lbs) high blood pressure, high cholesterol, indigestion, obese, poor focus and concentration etc. It took me some time to end up in this state through poor eating and lifestyle habits.

Today it is a much more positive and happy story with my health only because I chose to change my habits which created a different result in my life and body.

We can actually look at any person and could guess with reasonable accuracy what some of their habits may be currently in their lives at the moment.

Looking at someone who has an athletic physic, high energy, moves quickly and is nibble, one could assume that they exercise at least 3 times a week, eat light meals consisting of many leafy greens and vegetables, lean meats or fish, sleeps regularly etc.

On the other hand if we were to see a person who was obese, moving slowly in pain we could assume (not in all cases) that they don’t exercise, eat high fat / sugar diet, possibly drink sugary drinks or alcohol etc.

The habits of these 2 people will dictate how their lives will turn out in relation to their health.

The habits we develop in our health for example don’t just stop there! I remember a saying from one of my mentors recently that went like this.

How you do anything is how you do everything

Once you develop a habit (good or bad) in an area of your life (health, relationships, career, finances etc…) that same habit will be present in your whole life not just in any one area.

Clean up and develop good and better habits in one area of your life and the other areas of your life will improve automatically.

Our lives represent the sum total of all our habits both good and not so good. Habits "R" Us whether we like it or not.

Now it's time to start creating and up grading our habits.
